Indeterminate – these are the best yielding tomatoes for growing in greenhouses. They look like tall liana bushes. These tomatoes in the greenhouse give the largest yield. Tall tomatoes are classified as indeterminate: their growth can reach up to 7 meters, they can grow for several years and produce a rich harvest (up to 50 brushes can form on one plant). The system of growing techniques for such plants has its own characteristics that must be observed in order to maximize the potential of tall tomatoes.
Tall tomatoes: benefits of varieties
Tall greenhouse tomatoes have a lot of advantages over determinant varieties.
It is worth noting that tall varieties are much more convenient to care for. You don’t have to bend down, which means that your lower back will not hurt
Such plants allow:
- Get more fruits (one plant can produce up to 15 racemes).
- Save acreage (due to high yields, bushes of indeterminate varieties may be smaller than undersized ones).
- Save the labor costs of the gardener and the cost of the agrotechnical complex (fewer plants mean less time and money to provide plants with care, light, heat, top dressing).
- To increase the economic benefits of cultivation. The fruits ripen asynchronously, which makes it possible to realize the harvest gradually and eliminates the risk of damage to the fruits due to excessive storage of the crop. In addition, plants can bear fruit until late autumn.
How to plant very tall tomatoes
In order to get a big harvest from tall plants, their seedlings need to be properly prepared and planted.
Tall tomatoes usually have larger fruits and tall shoots. They require stems to be tied up, as branches can break due to the weight of the fruit.
Technology for planting tall tomatoes includes:
- Preparation of seed material. Pre-soak seeds for seedlings for a day in cloth bags, in a solution of agricol, effecton, nitroammophoska and wood ash (fertilizer in equal amounts, one teaspoon per liter of water). Fertilizer temperature should be at least 25° Celsius (77° Fahrenheit).
- . After this procedure, the seed material is hardened (placed in the refrigerator for two days).
- Ground preparation. Fertilize and warm the soil for seedlings: use humus, soddy soil, peat in equal parts; heat this mixture in the oven, on a baking sheet, for 20 minutes at a temperature not lower than 110° Celsius (230° Fahrenheit). For 12-15 kg of soil mixture, we recommend adding a tablespoon of mineral fertilizers (superphosphate, potassium sulfate, urea).
- Preparing seedlings. Grow seedlings of tall tomatoes in a box 6-7 cm high. A small greenhouse is also suitable for this purpose. You should plant the seeds to a depth of 1 cm, keeping a distance between the holes of 50 mm, then sprinkle the seedlings with soil mixture and put the boxes in a warm, bright place (seeds germinate better at a temperature of 22-25 ° Celsius).
- Planting plants. You will need to transplant the seedlings into the ground 2-2.5 months after growing at home. Transplant in the evening in pre-moistened soil. You should plant high bushes one at a time, in pre-fertilized holes, with an area of 30 cm square, to a depth of 15 cm. The distance between plants should be at least 60 cm, between beds – 70 cm.
We recommend planting Bushes in a checkerboard pattern: such placement will contribute to the formation of a strong root system of the plant, its better ventilation and, as a result, better self-pollination.
How to grow in a greenhouse
In addition to the proper preparation of seed material and seedlings, in order to grow the maximum number of fruits, you should also properly care for tall tomatoes in the greenhouse.
To get the desired crop of greenhouse tomatoes, you should take care of them with all responsibility
Growing tall tomatoes requires compliance with agrotechnical recommendations regarding:
- Watering the plants. You should water tall plants abundantly (at least a liter per bush), exclusively at the root, 2 times a week (more often on hot, sunny days), settled water with a temperature of 25 ° C (77 ° Fahrenheit).
- Agrotechnical measures. Tall plants must be tied up. This can be done with a net, pegs or rope. In addition, the bushes must be pinched and cleaned of unnecessary sheets.
- Feeding plants. Following planting, tomatoes are fed every one and a half to two weeks with both ready-made and home-made fertilizers.
In addition, the soil in the greenhouse should be mulched (using your own, last year’s tops of tomatoes, straw or hay).
Tall tomatoes in a greenhouse Summary
Growing tall tomatoes is quite easy: by choosing a high-yielding variety that is resistant to diseases, pests, and climate change, you can get a large crop of tomatoes with high commercial characteristics without putting much effort. With tall tomatoes, gardening can not only be a pleasure, but also bring a lot of income!
